A Mind That Won’t Stop Popping
🧠 Popcorn Thoughts and the Mind That Won’t Stop Popping
We have so many thoughts each day — like popcorn popping, one after another. Some say we have 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day. Even if we go conservative and say 6,000, that’s still one thought every 10 seconds.
When we’re anxious or under pressure, those thoughts speed up. They loop. They bounce. And suddenly, it’s like a mental popcorn machine that won’t switch off.
🔥 Stuck on the Burnt Bits
Now imagine you’re cooking popcorn. One kernel gets burnt. Instead of tossing it aside, you fixate on it.
“I always mess things up.”
“I shouldn’t have said that.”
“I’m a failure — I can’t even cook popcorn.”
This is negative bias — our mind’s tendency to latch onto what went wrong. We spiral into should’ve, would’ve, could’ve thinking, which leads to frustration, shame, and emotional exhaustion. Our brain becomes like a saucepan with the lid about to pop off from too much unhelpful thinking.
🍿 Popcorn Breathing: A Playful Way to Find Calm
To help children return to the present, I’ve created playful breathing cards that act as anchors — using imagination, movement, and rhythm to gently guide them into calm.
One of the favourites? Popcorn Breathing.
Try it:
-
Take a deep breath in.
-
As you breathe out, say “pop pop pop pop pop.”
-
Curl your hands into little kernels and let them bounce around like they’re cooking.
If your child feels jittery or hyper, start with fast popping. Then gradually slow it down, just like popcorn does as it finishes cooking.
Meeting their energy first is the bridge to regulation. Popcorn Breathing helps them shift gears gently, without resistance, and have fun doing it.
✨ We’re Not Our Thoughts
Popcorn Breathing is a reminder:
You are not your thoughts.
You’re the observer.
The one who notices the popping — and gets to choose what comes next.
Every breath is a chance to begin again.
